A northern atoll opened up relatively recently, so the islands here are newer than the Malé ones — and built to a newer specification, which is why nearly every resort in this list sells a villa with its own pool.

Newer is not automatically better, but it does show up in the rooms: bigger decks, private pools as a standard category rather than a top suite, and all-inclusive plans built to keep you on the island rather than sell you excursions off it. That last point is the honest one. Raa is an atoll where the island is the holiday; there is no village to walk to and no second resort within an easy boat ride, so the board basis matters more here than almost anywhere else we sell. The transfer is a seaplane and seaplanes fly in daylight only, so the flight you book out of India decides whether you arrive on your first day or your second.

Questions about Raa Atoll

Because they were built recently, and a private pool has been a standard category in new Maldivian resorts for about a decade. In the older Malé atolls it is usually a top suite instead.

More than in the Malé atolls, yes. There is nowhere else to eat and no boat to a village, so a room-only rate here is a bill that grows all week. We quote both so the difference is a number rather than an assumption.
