Getting Around Singapore: MRT, Buses, Taxis & Tourist Passes Explained (2026)

Singapore's public transport is the best answer to "do I need a car or driver?" you'll ever get: no. The MRT reaches every attraction that matters, trains run every 2–5 minutes, everything is in English, and a full day of travel rarely costs more than S$6. Here's the complete system, decoded for visitors.

The MRT: your default for everything

The Mass Rapid Transit network has six main lines; as a tourist you'll mostly use three:

• East-West Line (green): Changi Airport ↔ city; also Bugis and Chinatown connections.
• North-South Line (red): Orchard Road, City Hall, Marina Bay.
• Circle & Downtown lines: Gardens by the Bay (Bayfront), Little India, HarbourFront for Sentosa.

Trains run roughly 5:30am to midnight. Fares are distance-based: S$1.10–2.30 per ride. Eating, drinking (even water) and durians are banned on board — fines are real, and so is the air-conditioning.

How to pay: three options compared

1. Contactless bank card (simplest)

Tap any Visa/Mastercard contactless credit or debit card (or Apple/Google Pay) at the gates — no ticket needed. For Indian travellers, cards with low forex markup make this the zero-effort option. Each traveller needs their own card.

2. EZ-Link / SimplyGo card (the local way)

Buy at any MRT station or 7-Eleven (about S$10 including S$5 stored value), top up as needed. Useful if you'd rather prepay in cash and track spending.

3. Singapore Tourist Pass (only for heavy days)

Unlimited MRT and bus rides: 1 day S$17, 2 days S$26, 3 days S$29 (plus refundable deposit options). The maths: you need 6+ rides a day to beat pay-per-ride — worth it only for packed sightseeing days, not for a relaxed itinerary. Buses: the scenic upgrade

Same payment cards, same fares, slower but with views — the upper deck of a double-decker through the city is sightseeing that costs S$1.50. Google Maps handles Singapore bus routing flawlessly.

Taxis & Grab: when they're worth it

• Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber) is what locals use — a downtown hop costs S$8–15, airport to city S$25–35.
• When taxis beat the MRT: groups of 3–4 (splitting fare ≈ MRT cost), the Night Safari return after the shuttle stops, luggage days, and post-midnight travel.
• Street taxis meter honestly; surcharges apply at midnight–6am, from the airport, and in the CBD at peak hours.

Getting to and from Changi Airport

• MRT: ~S$2, 45 minutes to City Hall with one easy change at Tanah Merah. Fine with light luggage.
• Grab/taxi: S$25–40, 20–30 minutes door-to-door.

Getting to Sentosa (it's easier than it looks)

MRT to HarbourFront, then any of: the Sentosa Express monorail from VivoCity Level 3 (S$4, includes island entry), the Boardwalk (free, 15 minutes, sheltered), or the cable car (premium price, best views). Within Sentosa, buses and the beach tram are free.

What transport costs for a real trip

Five quick rules locals wish tourists knew

1. Stand on the left of escalators; walk on the right.
2. Let passengers alight before boarding — Singaporeans queue at the marked arrows.
3. Reserved seats are genuinely reserved; you'll be photographed for social media if you nap in one.
4. No eating or drinking on trains and platforms (S$500 fine).
5. Last trains leave the city around 11:30pm–midnight — check your line's timing before a late night out.
