Singapore in 4 Days: Adding the Wildlife Day

Four days is where a Singapore trip stops being a highlights reel. The first three days are the ones everybody does; the fourth is the one that decides whether you saw the city or just its skyline. Spend it in the north, at the wildlife parks, and the whole trip changes shape.

Days one to three

Marina Bay and the waterfront, then Sentosa, then the heritage quarters — the same spine as a three-day trip, with the difference that you are no longer choosing between them. Take the bay day slower than you would on a shorter trip: the Gardens are worth a morning rather than two hours, and the promenade is pleasanter walked than marched.

Day four — Mandai and the wildlife parks

The four parks at Mandai — the Zoo, Bird Paradise, River Wonders and the Night Safari — are the strongest single thing Singapore has that is not a shopping centre or a skyline, and they sit forty minutes north of the city where most short trips never reach.

Two of them is a comfortable day. The Zoo in the morning and the Night Safari after dark is the classic pairing, with the long gap in the middle spent at Bird Paradise or back at the hotel. Trying all four in a day is a mistake people make once.

Getting there is the part that catches people out. Public transport is a train and then a bus, roughly an hour each way, and the Night Safari finishes long after the trains are pleasant. This is the day of a Singapore trip where a car genuinely pays for itself.

The alternative fourth day

If wildlife is not the draw, spend the day on the water instead: the Southern Islands by speedboat, or a slower morning in Katong and the East Coast, which is where Singaporeans actually eat. Both are quieter than anything in the first three days, and a four-day trip has room for one quiet day in a way a three-day trip does not.

With children

Four days is the shortest trip that works properly with young children, because it lets you put a slow day between two busy ones. The usual order is Sentosa, a slow day, the wildlife parks, then the bay — the reverse of the adult version, and much less likely to end in tears at the Gardens.

Mandai in practice

The four parks share a car park and a set of gates, which makes them sound closer together than they feel. Plan it as two visits with a gap:

• Morning — the Zoo from opening. The animals are active early and the middle of the day is when both they and you stop enjoying it.
• Early afternoon — either Bird Paradise, which is mostly shaded walk-through aviaries, or back to the hotel if there are small children.
• 7pm — the Night Safari, which starts after dark and runs late. Book the tram; the walking trails are better done after it, not instead.

River Wonders is the one to drop if something has to go. It is good, and it is also the most similar to the Zoo you have just walked round.

Eating on the wildlife day

Mandai's own food is functional rather than good, and it is the only option once you are inside. Either accept that, or plan a late lunch back in the city between the two visits — Ang Mo Kio and Bishan are both on the way back and both have proper hawker centres.

What four days does not stretch to

A day trip out of the country. Johor and Bintan both need a full day plus the crossing, and taking one out of four leaves you with three — at which point you are planning a three-day trip with extra travel in it.
